New Orleans is Sinking Faster Than Originally Thought: Levee System Will Keep Cracking and Breaking As City Sinks into the Gulf of Mexico

I'm in the process of reading the 6,000 page report from the Army Corps of Engineers on what went wrong with the levee system in and around New Orleans and I am struck by a few things:

  • They've come to realize that New Orleans is sinking faster than previously estimated. Some areas are sinking more than an inch per year.
  • The report says that cracks in the barriers themselves from the uneven sinking occurred and that the ground behind the barriers was unstable, allowing the Gulf waters to simply push the levees back and create huge breaches along the entire line.
How can they even consider rebuilding all of New Orleans as it was?
