Pro-choice Republicans should follow Senator Arlen Spectre out the door and join the Democratic Party.
They're closet Democrats anyways.
The only part of his defection that I disagree with is that he isn't resigning his seat and running under his new party's banner, as a few others have done in the past.
The following senators decided to switch parties and resigned before running for the same seat under their new party (and won the special election):
Wayne Morris (Oregon)
Strom Thurmond (South Carolina)
The following Representatives did the same thing:
Albert Watson (South Carolina)
Phil Gramm (Texas)
Specter was getting killed in the polls against his primary challenger, so this may be a large part of why he's doing this now. And for giving the Democrats their supermajority, they may have offered a deal to Specter in exchange for his defection.
Good riddance.

Conservatives Should Declare Independence from the GOP: They'd Do Better With Their Own Party
I think the time has come for the conservatives to break with the GOP. They're Democratic-Republicans anyways!
The Republicans lost because they tried to out-Democrat the Democrats. And then they became the Democrats, spending money that isn't theirs, and not agreeing with anyone (including themselves) on anything. And they tried to push the conservatives out of the way in the process.
Being a conservative is about taking a stand, and living by it, not changing a stand when the wind of public opinion starts to blow in a different direction. All one has to do is look at the global warming hubris and how McCain embraced it to win over Democratic supporters.
And now we see the consequences of trying to out-Democrat the Democrats: the GOP's butt is in a sling, the result of voter dissatisfaction with Democratic-Republicans.
Will the moderates in the GOP learn?

Immigration Bill Dies Again: Now They Can Write a Better Bill
The debate to end the debate on the incredibly bad immigration bill failed in the Senate yesterday by a comfortable margin. So now they're saying that immigration won't be taken up until there is a new President and new members of Congress get seated. GOOD!!
The majority of Republicans refused to vote for it as President Bush had wished, but he's on the wrong side in this debate. So were the GOP'ers who voted with Ted Kennedy.
Now they can quit treating this thing like a hot potato and write a better bill that isn't as big a joke as this last one was.
