List of Ashcroft Replacements Being Circulated

There are names being circulated around Washington as to who might be John Ashcroft’s replacement. PepsiCo Executive Larry Thompson, New York Governor George Pataki, former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani, White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, and Marc Racicot, chairman of Bush's re-election effort, are on the short list as well as some others that the Administration haven’t revealed yet.

I don’t know much about most of these names, but I think Giuliani would be a better Director of Homeland Security. He would do an excellent job as attorney general, but his statement that he would like to be the one to flip the switch on Osama bin-Laden gives me pause.

I am against the death penalty in all forms. That will set me against about 70% of Americans who favor the death penalty and 84% of Americans who think bin-Laden should get the death penalty if he is ever captured.

I do not know if it was a spur-of-the-moment comment, or if he meant it, but I think his style of leadership would be better put to use at Homeland Security as they are still in the formative stage. His book on leadership was excellent, and his acute powers of observation would get the Homeland Security Department to where it needs to be; protecting America’s security from external terrorist threats.

They may make their choice known later today.
